Longan
Longan is called the dragon's eye: crack the tan shell and a glassy orb stares back, dark seed gleaming behind the flesh. Fresh, it is cool and sweet; dried, it becomes an old-fashioned herbal treat.
Longan trees grew by the hundreds at the old plantation camps, and the orchards near Kona still fruit in late summer.
