Tamarind

Tamarind

ʻUmekee — tamarind — comes in brown pods like knotted ropes, filled with sticky pulp that is sweet, sour, and faintly floral all at once.

It became a plantation-era favorite: children pulled the pods apart and pressed the pulp into sweet-and-sour rounds to share on the walk home.
