Rambutan

Rambutan

Rambutan means 'hairy' in Malay, and the name is no joke — the fruit wears soft green spines like a small sun. Beneath them is the same translucent sweetness as its cousin, the lychee.

It reached Hawaiʻi along with the Chinese families who brought lychee, and the two trees still share a summer harvest.
