Nā Hale Liʻiliʻi

“The little houses”

The old beach hale were built for the climate, not for show: single-wall board construction lifted on post-and-pier lava rock so the breeze and the flood could both pass underneath, a corrugated tin roof to shrug off the rain, and jalousie louvers that cranked open to let the trade winds through.

The wide lanai was the real living room — a couple of worn chairs, ti and plumeria planted close for blessing and shade, and the dunes just down the path. They were never grand and never meant to be. They were meant to catch the wind and let you hear the rain.
