ʻUkulele on the Lānai
“Jumping flea” — the little island guitar
The ʻukulele arrived with Portuguese immigrants in the 1870s as a small braguinha, and Hawaiians made it theirs so completely that the world now hears the islands in four nylon strings.
Left on a chair on the lānai with meliʻa blossoms falling around it, it is not being put away. It is waiting for whoever sits down next.
