Kī Hōʻalu

Kī Hōʻalu

“Loosen the key” — Hawaiian slack-key guitar

Kī hōʻalu began when Hawaiian players took the guitars left by visiting cowboys and loosened the strings until the tuning rang open and sweet. The thumb keeps the bass moving while the fingers carry the melody above it.

It is music made for shade and for evenings, played slowly and usually for the few people sitting nearby rather than for a room.
