Star Fruit

Star Fruit

Carambola earned its name honestly: sliced across the grain, each piece is a perfect five-pointed star. The tree arrived in Hawaiʻi from Southeast Asia and now shades yards from Kailua to Hilo.

Sliced thin, the star shapes hold their edges in a glass of iced tea — which is why island restaurants use them the way a jeweler uses a setting.
