Muheʻe Starlight
Muheʻe — the Hawaiian bobtail squid, a tiny lantern of the night
No bigger than your thumb, a muheʻe hovers above the night sand, its speckled body glowing with a soft blue light. The glow comes from friendly bacteria living inside it — a lantern the squid carries everywhere.
By day it buries itself in the sand and sleeps. By night it hunts by its own light, one of the smallest and most magical residents of the Hawaiian sea.
