Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa — the reef triggerfish, Hawaiʻi's beloved state fish
Here she is — the most famous fish in Hawaiʻi, gliding over the coral in her geometric coat of yellow, black, white, and blue. The humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa wears her pattern like fine regalia.
Her long name means the triggerfish with a snout like a pig, and if you ever meet one up close you may hear the little grunt that earned it. At night she wedges into the reef and locks her dorsal spine like a door.
