ʻĀweoweo Embers

ʻĀweoweo — Hawaiian bigeye fish, embers of red in the deep blue

At the mouth of a dark lava cave, the ʻāweoweo gather like live coals — rose-red and silver, their great mirror eyes catching the one bright beam that reaches them from the surface. The deeper the blue around them, the warmer they seem to glow.

Hawaiian fishermen of old knew these fish well; their name echoes the red of the fire. Here in the shelter of the rock, the embers simply wait for evening, patient and bright.
