Kīkākapu Garden
Kīkākapu — butterflyfish, bright painted slippers of the reef
Two kīkākapu move through the coral garden side by side, lemon-yellow and lined in fine black, their false eyespots promising trouble to anyone who mistakes them for an easy meal. Pink and gold coral reaches up around them like a blooming meadow.
Many butterflyfish pair for years, patrolling the same patch of reef each day like old gardeners. Where these two wander, the coral is tidy, healthy, and bright.
