Sea purslane — the salty succulent of the lava shore
Used for: a mineral-rich, salty green eaten for nourishment; the cool, juicy leaves have also been pressed against minor scrapes and insect bites.
How to use: rinse young tips well to remove sand and salt spray, then eat a small handful raw in a poke or salad, or blanch quickly. Gather only where the shoreline is clean, and take a little from each patch.
