Peppermint in the Deep

The peppermint angelfish wears candy-bright red and white bands, but almost nobody sees one in the wild. It lives on very deep Pacific reefs, often far below ordinary scuba-diving depth.

Its brilliant pattern is hidden in dim blue water, where red light barely reaches. Seen under a diver's lamp, those scarlet stripes suddenly blaze back to life.
