A Crown on the Reef

The crown-of-thorns sea star feeds on coral polyps by turning its stomach outward over the reef. In ordinary numbers it is part of the ecosystem, creating openings where new coral can grow.

When populations boom, however, a crowd can consume living coral faster than it recovers. Reef balance depends not only on who lives there, but on how many arrive at once.
