The Reef Recycler

The Reef Recycler

Sea cucumbers swallow sand and organic debris, digest the nourishing bits, and return cleaner sediment behind them. Their patient work recycles nutrients and helps keep the seafloor healthy.

They may look slow and simple, but their flexible bodies contain remarkable defenses. Some can expel sticky threads to distract a predator, then patiently regenerate what was lost.
