The Giant Triton

The giant triton is one of the few animals able to prey on crown-of-thorns sea stars. Its enormous spiral shell can grow longer than a forearm, yet the living snail moves with quiet purpose.

Removing large tritons for their shells may leave reefs with fewer natural controls on sea-star outbreaks. Sometimes the most beautiful shell belongs exactly where it is — alive on the reef.
