“Lokelani” — the heavenly rose of Maui

Lokelani is the island flower of Maui and the only non-native flower to hold that honor. It is a small pink damask rose, brought to the islands in the 1800s and taken to heart ever since.

The name means heavenly rose. Layer after layer of deep pink petals wrap around a center you can barely see, and the fragrance is old-fashioned and unmistakable.

It grows best in the cool air upcountry, in gardens tended for generations. Maui claimed a rose, and the rose seems to have agreed to the arrangement.
