ʻĀhinahina
“ʻĀhinahina” — the silversword of Haleakalā
The Haleakalā silversword grows only on this one mountain, nowhere else on earth. Its silver hairs reflect the fierce high-altitude sun and trap warmth through freezing nights.
It spends decades as a low silver rosette, then sends up a single flowering spike taller than a person, hundreds of maroon blossoms at once — and then it dies. One bloom, one lifetime.
Seeing one flowering above the clouds is a matter of luck and timing. It is a good reminder that some things are worth waiting years for, and worth doing only once, completely.
