Pīkake

Pīkake

“Pīkake” — peacock, Princess Kaʻiulani’s jasmine

Pīkake is Arabian jasmine, and the Hawaiian name means peacock. Princess Kaʻiulani kept both peacocks and this jasmine in her Waikīkī garden, and the name of one became the name of the other.

The buds are picked closed and strung tight, so the lei opens slowly on the wearer through the evening, releasing its scent a little at a time.

A pīkake lei is the lei of romance and of hula dancers. It is a small flower doing an enormous amount of work — proof that presence has nothing to do with size.
