Puʻu Ōlaʻi

Puʻu Ōlaʻi

“Earthquake hill”

Puʻu Ōlaʻi, "earthquake hill," is the red cinder cone that rises between Big Beach and Little Beach at Mākena. Legend says it is the tail of a giant moʻo, a lizard spirit, turned to stone by Pele.

From the trail on its slopes, Little Beach curls like a seashell and Kahoʻolawe floats across the water.
