Heʻe in the Coral Cave

Heʻe in the Coral Cave

Heʻe — octopus, the color-changing thinker

The heʻe gathers itself into the mouth of a coral cave, bronze one moment and pearled with blue the next. Its arms rest against the stone as if the reef itself is listening through them.

Few creatures make stillness feel so intelligent. In that watchful eye, the whole sea seems to be considered and understood.
