Saddle Wrasse
Hīnālea lauwili — “leaf-turning wrasse”
Hīnālea lauwili, the saddle wrasse, is the most common fish in Hawaiʻi and nowhere else on earth. It is born female, and a dominant fish can change sex to male when the ranking male disappears — the whole social order rewrites itself in a matter of days.
