Manō — the shark, an ʻaumakua to many families
Manō, the tiger shark, is the reef's great housekeeper — she eats what is sick and what is dead and keeps the whole system honest. Many Hawaiian families kept a shark as an ʻaumakua, a guardian ancestor, and to see one pass slowly like this was not a fright but a greeting.
