Stingray in the Sand
Hīhīmanu — the ray
A ray buries itself by shivering its wings until the sand settles over its back, leaving only eyes and a tail exposed. It breathes through spiracles behind those eyes so it never has to inhale sand — a design so good that rays have been doing it, largely unchanged, for a hundred million years.
