The Reef Blooms at Night
On certain nights, many coral colonies release bundles of eggs and sperm into the water together. Temperature, sunset, and the lunar cycle help synchronize the extraordinary event.
The bundles rise like pink-gold snow falling upward. Most will be eaten, but a lucky few become swimming larvae and settle to begin new coral colonies.
