Waʻa in the Ironwood Shade
Waʻa — canoe
Pulled beyond the tide line, the canoes rest beneath ironwood branches with their outriggers turned toward the water. The ʻama gives each waʻa stability, but its balance still depends on every paddler moving together.
Canoe clubs are living communities as much as sporting teams. Elders teach rigging and ocean sense, keiki learn timing and care, and the boats carry generations of names, races and dawn practices in their hulls.
