“Pua lanahu” — the purple upcountry season

Jacaranda is not from Hawaiʻi, but every spring it takes over the upcountry roads with a purple so soft it looks painted on the air.

The petals fall in drifts and the pasture beneath the trees turns lavender, which is somehow even prettier than the branches above.

People plan drives around it. A tree that makes an entire island slow down for a few weeks has earned its place here.
