Naupaka
“Naupaka” — the half flower of the shore
Naupaka grows where almost nothing else will — in salt spray, on hot sand, right at the edge of the water. Its small white blossoms look torn in half, as though someone pulled away one side and walked off with it.
The legend says two lovers were separated, one sent to the mountains and one to the sea. The mountain naupaka and the beach naupaka each keep half a flower, and only together do they make a whole bloom.
The plant is a quiet hero of the coastline, holding dunes in place against the wind. Take your time with this one and notice how the leaves shine — that waxy coat is what lets it drink the sun and shrug off the salt.
