Torch Ginger Lei
“ʻAwapuhi” — ginger, a torch of scarlet
Torch ginger, ʻawapuhi, arrived from Southeast Asia and thrives in Hawaiʻi's wet valleys. Its scarlet bracts are dramatic enough that a single stem reads as a whole lei, and the related shampoo ginger was used for hair and scent.
