Lana Wai

Lana Wai

Lana wai means "to float on water" — the whole point of an infinity pool, where the far wall drops away and the surface seems to spill straight into the sea.

From this spot the silhouette of Kaho'olawe and the long shoulder of Haleakalā ring the horizon, and on a still morning the water goes so flat that pool and ocean become one sheet of blue.

Swimmers here often stop mid-stroke and simply hang in the water. There is nothing to reach for; the view has already arrived.
