To the Break

To the Break

In old Hawaiʻi, surfboards were shaped from solid koa or wiliwili and could weigh more than a grown person, so carrying one to the water was always a shared effort. Two friends walking a board down to the shore break is a small scene that carries a long history: Hawaiian women surfed as equals from the very beginning, with their own boards and their own breaks.
