Hydrangea
“Pua uliuli” — the cool-country blue
Hydrangeas love the cool mist of upcountry Maui, where they line the roadsides in heads of blue and lavender the size of your hand.
The color comes from the soil itself — more acid makes them bluer, which means the land is quietly choosing the shade.
Driving through the fog and finding a whole hedge of them is one of the small, reliable pleasures of the mountain.
