Waiʻānapanapa
“Glistening fresh water”
Waiʻānapanapa means “glistening fresh water,” named for the freshwater caves along this black-sand coast. Legend tells of Princess Popoalaea hiding in the caves from her jealous chief; the water is said to run red each spring, though science credits tiny red shrimp rather than sorrow.
