Kāʻanapali

“Divided cliffs”

Kāʻanapali means “divided cliffs,” a nod to Puʻu Kekaʻa — Black Rock — the lava point at the north end where Maui chiefs once trained and where Hawaiians believed souls leapt into the next world. For centuries this shoreline was a royal retreat; today its three miles of gold sand are among the most walked in the islands.
