Heʻe Mauli in Midday Light
Heʻe mauli — day octopus, a quick-changing spirit of the reef
At noon, a heʻe mauli glides into the brightest part of the reef. Copper gives way to turquoise across its skin, while tiny ridges rise and soften until the animal seems woven from coral, water, and light.
Every color is a choice and every arm is listening. For one shining moment, the reef's great shape-shifter lets us see how alive the art of disappearing can be.
