Before modern docks made cattle shipping easier, moving livestock off parts of Hawaiʻi could be an astonishing operation.
Paniolo drove cattle into the ocean and guided them through the surf toward boats. Historical records describe cattle being transported offshore and hoisted aboard waiting ships. It is one of the wildest chapters in Hawaiʻi's ranching history.
