ʻŌhiʻa Lehua
“Lehua” — the first bloom on new lava
ʻŌhiʻa lehua is the most important native tree in Hawaiʻi. It is the first plant to return to bare lava, anchoring itself in cracks and building soil for everything that comes after it.
The flowers are not petals at all but dense bundles of red stamens, shaped like tiny fireworks. They feed the native ʻapapane and ʻiʻiwi, whose curved bills fit them precisely. The old story says the flowers are the separated lovers Lehua and ʻŌhiʻa, reunited as blossom and branch.
This tree is worth building slowly. The branches are gnarled and dark, the flowers are impossibly bright, and the contrast between them is what makes the story work.
