Mangoes over the Wall

A mature backyard mango tree produces on its own schedule and with impossible generosity. Branches bow over the wall, fruit perfumes the warm air, and every family has an opinion about which variety is sweetest.

The lava-rock wall was fitted by hand without hiding the shape of each stone. Tree and wall have grown old together: one holding the yard in place, the other making enough fruit to share up and down the street.
