Serves 1

Ingredients

  • 1 oz aged dark rum, for floating
  • 1 oz light rum
  • ½ oz orange curacao
  • ½ oz orgeat (almond syrup)
  • ¾ oz fresh lime juice
  • Crushed ice
  • Mint sprig and an orchid, to garnish

Directions

  1. Shake the light rum, curacao, orgeat, and lime juice with crushed ice.
  2. Pour unstrained into a tall glass.
  3. Float the dark rum gently over the top.
  4. Garnish with the spent lime shell, mint, and an orchid.

Trader Vic mixed the first one in 1944; a Tahitian friend tasted it and said “Mai tai roa ae” — out of this world.
