Bougainvillea

“Pua kepalō” — paper petals of the sun

Bougainvillea's color comes not from petals but from bracts — modified leaves surrounding tiny white flowers. In Hawaiian it is sometimes called pua kepalō, and it thrives in exactly the hot, dry conditions that defeat other blooms.
