Kīkākapu — “strongly forbidden”
Raccoon butterflyfish are called kīkākapu, “strongly forbidden,” a name given to fish once reserved or set apart by kapu. They pair for life, swimming side by side over the same stretch of reef for years, and their black eye mask hides the real eye from anything hunting them.
