Pākuʻikuʻi — the Achilles tang, jet black with a burning orange sail
Against the deep blue of the drop-off, a pākuʻikuʻi turns broadside and lights up like a signal fire — jet-black body, a great orange sail along its back, and the famous orange mark near its tail that brightens as it passes the sunbeams.
This tang belongs to Hawaiʻi more than almost anywhere else, living in the rough, wave-washed edges of the reef. Where the water is wild and the light is strong, the blaze burns brightest.
